Minecraft loʻi

Mahalo!

Purple Maiʻa is happy to announce that after a successful pilot year running after-school technology maker classes at Jarrett Middle School, we’ve received funding to continue our work at Jarrett and also expand to at least two more middle schools in the fall!

Next school year look out for us at Stevenson Middle School and Kamaile Academy. We’ll be running a refined version of our year 1 curriculum, which features: basic circuitry and making using littleBits; computer hardware, software, and networking; and learning about and building an ahupuaʻa in Minecraft. We hope to add in a quarter of modding in Minecraft.

This is all possible because of crucial support from Hawaiʻi Community Foundation’s Oio Fund for after-school programs engaging at-risk youth, as well as continuing support from the Consuelo Foundation. As we continue to work on fundraising (talks are looking solid with a few others) we give a heartfelt Mahalo to these funders; we’ll be striving to honor the amazing missions of these two organizations by bringing technology education to underserved students.

We’d also like to thank our collaborators at DevLeague; without them our pilot year would not have been possible. You guys rock!

And thank you again to last year’s funders, who took a chance on us in our pilot phase:

Atherton Foundation

Consuelo Foundation

Island Insurance Foundation
