About Purple Mai‘a

We educate and empower culturally engaged, community-oriented, technology makers and problem solvers. We started with one after school class at Jarrett Middle School in 2014 and are now in service of 40 employees, 3 pulapula (departments) and multiple programs across the pae ʻāina. 

As Purple Maiʻa embarks on the next 10+ years to serve ʻohana from ʻōpio to kūpuna in areas of technology education, entrepreneurship and workforce development, the Accountant will help ensure that we are maintain our fiscal responsibility to our staff, our funders, and community.  Learn more about our vision via the Purple Maiʻa mākia – Eahou.

Job Overview

The Accountant will play a crucial role in maintaining financial records, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations, and supporting the organization’s overall financial health. This position reports to the co-CEOs and involves collaboration with the Director of Operations and various departments to provide accurate and timely financial information.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Reporting:

  • Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Generate financial reports for management, board members, and external stakeholders.
  • Create reports for program directors to easily assess current grant spends and remaining balances.  

Budgeting and Forecasting:

  • Assist in the development of annual budgets and cash flow projections.
  • Monitor budget variances and provide recommendations for cost control. 
  • Review program budgets and cash flow projections. 

Accounts Payable and Receivable:

  • Oversee and process accounts payable and receivable transactions. 
  • Ensure timely and accurate invoicing and collections.

Grant Compliance:

  • Track federal and non-federal grant awards, restrictions, and expenditures.
  • Keep track of project names, project periods, and grant funding sources for all programs. 
  • Notify program leads about remaining grant funds to be spent within project periods. 

Audit Support:

  • Prepare documentation and schedules for annual audits.
  • Collaborate with auditors and respond to audit inquiries.
  • Develop and maintain financial policies and procedures to ensure compliance with accounting standards and regulations.

General Ledger Management:

  • Reconcile and maintain general ledger accounts.
  • Identify and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner.

Tax Compliance:

  • Assist in the preparation of tax filings and compliance with applicable regulations. 
  • Prepare and send out 1099s to vendors.

Qualifications

  • CPA or relevant professional certification is preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit setting.
  • Proficient in accounting software, AR & AP platform, and Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets.
  • Strong understanding of nonprofit accounting principles and regulations.
